VBS

The theme for this year's VBS was High Seas Expedition. Every room in our new church building was fantastically designed and decorated to look like the kids were on board their very own ship...definitely had a super cool pirate-y feel. We had the opportunity to invite two 5 year old girls from our neighborhood and 3 of Zach's buddies from the Bible study I've hosted in my home off and on over the past few years. Zoey Hammock and her brother Ian lives across the street and 2 doors down, and Isabella's Grandmother lives just next door to her. I am so thrilled that now we can step outside our front door and skip with glee to playdates galore.Taryn Boian, and twins Morgan and Sophia Elder have been Zach's special friends since toddler-hood.From 9 to noon our children sang exciting songs, played water games, wiggled and danced, and learned the most valuable truth's about God and His word.Day 1: God's Word is true
Day 2: God's Word is comforting
Day 3: God's Word is surprising
Day 4: God's Word is life-changing
Day 5: God's Word is for everyonePerhaps the coolest concept they learned was that they can and should be looking for evidence of God all around them. Jayden came home after the 1st day and asked if I had ever had a "God sighting". I said "of course!" and shared about the births of each of my kids. But they were taught that a God sighting can be as simple as sitting outside and pointing out things God made, or praying for a family member, and thanking God for that person. The most magical time of each day was spent just after I'd sign Jayden and Zach out of their crew. We'd walk outside and lay a blanket on the grass under a shady tree and join our friends for a picnic lunch. Eventually the sandwiches and snacks were set aside for games of hide and seek, and running in circles. Here are pictures galore...

Milestone

Saturday, July 17, 1999 was an awesome day! It was the day that Marty and I exchanged the vows of marriage, and committed before God, friends and family to honor, love and cherish each other for our lifetime.I can remember so many details as though it were yesterday. Especially the feeling I had flying to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We held hands and laughed as we spoke to each other as 'husband' and 'wife'.
But alas the years have whisked by and the pictures are proof that time has aged us. But, as is true for wine and Parmesano Reggiano, time has made us better; richer.
We've matured spiritually and emotionally. We've become less critical of each other's human-ness. We've grown to enjoy the other's quirky kinks. We have a deeper intimacy that allows us to communicate more effectively and end squabbles with greater ease. God has been good to us through the last 11 years, and I look forward to growing older and wiser with my soul mate; my suitable helper.

Genesis 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
*****

We celebrated this 11th Anniversary with dinner at Ladyface Ale Company, a French bistro I had been longing to try... the Sausage Plate with Three Mustards was divine. Then we headed to the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica to see the street performers and indulge in dessert and espresso at Monsieur Marcel.
This date was made possible by our family-camp CCA (child care assistant), Sarah, and her sister Annie. They drove down from Santa Barbara to watch our 3 chick-a-dees and spend the night with us!

seriously amazing

At 10 a.m. yesterday we plodded down the street to Zoey's house where Jayden had her 1st oil painting class. Here is the finished product:Zoey's Grandmother is an accomplished artist who teaches at an art studio in Agoura Hills. But for the summer she's opened her home to 4 preschoolers and is instructing them in step-by-step processes of color-mixing, layout, blending and using a palette knife. Jayden loves to share how she 'smeared' the background color, and 'scooped up' paint and 'dabbed' it to make the flowers, but she says that Teacher June painted the vase.

Neighbors

Lydia and her children, Zoey and Ian, live just a couple of houses down the street and yet its been 2 years since we've had them in our home.
Oh, we've seen them plenty of times; driving in their car, walking to the mailbox. And we do the neighborly thing which is to wave and smile. All the while in my head I think and pray about my Christian witness in the neighborhood and question how effective it could possibly be if I'm content to just wave and drive along.
I've told my kids about this dilemma, and in February we put a little more action to our thoughts and created cards for Zoey and Ian so that when their Grandpa walked them to the mailbox something fun would be waiting inside. A month or so later Jayden and Zachary received a postcard in return - all the way from Paris where they were on vacation!!

We reconnected at a neighbors house on 4th of July weekend and promised each other to make plans asap. Shortly thereafter Marty and I spent time in specific prayer for our neighborhood and our relationships with the families on our street. And literally the next morning as I walked into Bed Bath and Beyond to replace a broken iron, and with all 3 kids in tow, there stood Lydia and Ian in the check out line!

(Side Story: our next stop was to get FroYo across town and there we encountered Erin our college bound neighbor whom I've longed to connect with!)

Official plans were made and we had them over for a spectacular lunch play-date 2 days later. We hung out for hours and finished the afternoon in their backyard on the trampoline. Zoey is now signed up for our church's VBS and Jayden is signed up for 2-hour oil painting lessons with Zoey's grandma on Mondays.
God does amazing things when we pray. He makes the connections for us. We don't have to fret and plan, clean and organize. We simply need to have a willing heart, open hands and eyes ready to see what He will do in, around, and through us.
I'm so fired up to witness what God has in store for our neighborhood!

Deuteronomy 3:24
"O Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do."

Celebrate with a splash

We opted out of the annual Moorpark Firework Spectacular this year because the idea of occupying and chasing after Oliver in a park filled with thousands of people seemed exhausting. Thankfully our alternative plan came with a neighborly knock on the door last week when a family on our street invited us to their backyard BBQ and swim party.

Noodle Out

Nine days ago Jayden braved her way through "Surgery Day" (which I will blog about next week when I have time to access her baby pix on the upstairs computer). Today she hurdled over fear yet again for "Noodle Out" day.

The noodle, not it's technical name of course, was a clear, plastic, macaroni noodle shaped devise that the surgeon sutured in her nostrils for support and better breathing during the 1st week of healing.
This purpose having been accomplished, we trekked down to Westwood this morning to have Dr. Bradley take it out. A super simple task --- he just snipped the stitch and pulled it out -- but it took a while as Jayden needed a good cry before she could trust that it wouldn't hurt. She'll tell you now that it was "soooooo easy!".

Here's pictures of :

--the kids loaded in the car for the journey through LA rush hour traffic. Had to make a pitstop at Starbucks first.
--in the parking garage of the UCLA Medical center with Malia Bear and Bobo Bear (another blog to come about these new friends).

And videos of

--the chaos of 3 kids in a waiting room

--crossing 'today' off the calendar
